This article focuses on the visit of the author to the campus of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan to attend fraternity. About one in four of Michigan's undergraduates participate in this white exclusionary ritual each fall, according to Jo Rumsey, the assistant director of housing information. This year 779 new members were inducted into fraternities, almost twice the number that joined in 1975. "We lost 30 to 40 percent of the fraternities in the late sixties and early seventies," Rumsey said, but since 1975, at least nine chapters-including three which are predominantly Jewish have come back.
