This article focuses on the involvement of Gary Hart, U.S. Presidential candidate in a sex scandal. The fact that Hart had a long-term relationship with a woman in Washington was well known to journalists in town, including some at "The Washington Post," long before Donna Rice entered the picture and Lynn Armandt rang up "The Miami Herald." Hart, indeed, used to share a house with "The Post's" Bob Woodward. When Hart ran for the Democratic nomination in 1984 none of these witting journalists taxed him in print with his extramarital relationship or declared that it rendered him unfit for office. But with the scandal at flood tide "The Post" entered the sex-policing business, apparently at the vehement urging of managing editor Len Downie.
