The article presents information on the status of politics in different parts of the U.S. The day after the California earthquake marketing consultants for the Baby Bell phone companies rushed out a press release. As the region recovers from a natural disaster it advised, information about the re-opening of services is key to resumption of normal activities. Shortly after senator Alfonse D'Amato's letter landed in hundreds of thousands of mailboxes, The Village Voice revealed that in 1984 and 1985 D'Amato lobbied then the U.S. Attorney Rudolph Giuliani on behalf of two organized crime figures. D'Amato himself confirmed that he called Giuliani in support of reducing the sentence of Mario Gigante, a member of the Genovese crime family convicted of extortion.
