The article focuses on the motion picture "The Step Father," directed by Joseph Ruben and written by Donald D. Westlake. Jerry Blake is the central figure of the movie. As played by Terry O'Quinn, Blake is a self-made parody of a television father. Westlake, who's a veteran writer of crime fiction, knows his genre well enough to understand how it can, sometimes, transcend itself. It's an abstract, stylized form; and a great murderer, one whose actions are imagined as horrifyingly precise expressions of the most familiar motives, can be a fabulous metaphoric figure, radiating meaning like a perfect concert in a sonnet.
