The article focuses on the book "The Old Left," by Daniel Menaker Alfred. Menaker's stories are so skillful, and so unambitious, that a casual reader might easily take them to be much more or much less than what they really are. The book's central figure is the aging Uncle Sol, a devout atheist, a bachelor, a Communist, who hangs on to life with a barbed or just cranky wit and a hyperbolic memory of his political glory days. The two pieces that open the book, "Brothers" and "I Spy," occur before Uncle Sol is introduced.
