The article focuses on the book "A Sport of Nature," by Nadine Gordime. It seems that like all the brave of heart, she means to push on till daybreak, patiently, obsessively filling in the many political end games she can imagine for the lives of white South Africans, whose time is almost up. The book is shaped around suspense, and suspense is one of the great reading pleasures it offers. Structured by jump cuts, the story starts with the solidly familiar, only to rush past the present moment into a nearby future, when South Africa will be changed, changed utterly.
