The article focuses on the book "Out of Step: An Unquiet Life in the 20th Century," by Sidney Hook. The past few years have witnessed a spate of memoirs by the New York intellectuals and an equally daunting flood of historical studies about this quarrelsome family of writers. The length of Hook's stream-of-contentiousness account of his unquiet life is commensurate with his role as this community's resident philosopher and social theorist as well as with his seniority and though his book holds few surprises, it testifies to the important place he has occupied in modern American cultural life.
