Who was behind the May 14,1987 coup in Fiji is not clear, but powerful forces were dismayed with the results of the April 12, 1987 election that ousted the government of staunchly pros Western Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. The press in Australia and New Zealand has reported that there is substantial evidence of outside involvement in the coup. Most significant is that from April 29 to May 1, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, General Vernon Walters, paid a visit to Fiji. At press time the situation was still chaotic and troubling questions about the U.S. involvement remain unanswered.
