Italy goes to the polls on June 14 and 15, 1987 and there are signs that the elections could lead to some important changes in the Italian political landscape. The Italian Communist Party, considered by many to be fuori gioco after its double defeat in the local elections and the wage-policy referendum of 1985, has mounted an offensive that has brought the party significant support from women, greens and left independents. The biggest surprise, however, was the candidacy of Antonio Giolitti, former Minister of the Budget and member of the European Parliament elected by the Socialists.
