The article discusses some thoughts on the church and Cuba. Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has entertained, instructed, informed and admonished his people with what must now add up to millions of words. In "Fidel and Religion," a new book that has had remarkable success in Cuba, Fidel carried on with a Brazilian priest, Frei Betto, a man Castro respects in part because he was imprisoned and tortured during the period of military rule in his native country. Religion never exists in a vacuum, and the portrait the comandante paints of growing up in the Cuba of the 1930s and 1940s grounds his comments in a colorful social and cultural setting.
