The author provides brief information on several novels. Generally the novelist performs a task very like that of a fashionable sexton who gives his best attention to weddings, but, in "Not Without Thorns. A Story," by Ennis Graham, one would say that he will have to attend to the other duties of his business. Not dissimilar is Mary Healy's "Lakeville; or Substance and Shadow," which gives a very good picture of social life in a Western city, for Lakeville is easily recognized as Chicago. Edward Eggleston's "The Mystery of Metropolisville" is very good. W.D. Howells' "A Chance Acquaintance," which appeared during the first half of this year in the "Atlantic Monthly," introduces some of the people who had figured briefly in his "Wedding Journey," and weaves for them a love-story on Canadian ground.
