In 1975, the South Africans had declared Huambo, Angola, the provisional capital of the Democratic Republic of Angola and had installed a sham regime consisting of the self-proclaimed leadership of their "guerrilla" proxies. Fighting between tribalized factions of this would-be bantustan made it easier, in 1976, for the Angolan government to re-take Huambo, which has not since been threatened with capture by any of South Africa's surrogates. One of those surrogate groups has disintegrated. The other one will live just as long as its patrons allow. Judas Savimbi is one of the most protean and opportunist figures in Africa. He has at various times been a collaborator with the Portuguese imperial authorities.
