The most important task of the lexicography etymologist is the distribution of our piebald vocabulary into nationalities, the reference of its several constituents to the multifarious linguistic sources from which we have taken them. In the great majority of cases, as has been already observed, the Latin words which compose a part of our vocabulary have been introduced since the middle of the fourteenth century through the French.
