This article presents information on some recent socio-political developments. It is informed that ten years ago, in the midst of chaotic attempts to stabilize the out-of-control Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear plant, an instrument technician emerged from the reactor building in a panic and reported the core was melting. By the time Richard Thornburgh, then Governor of Pennsylvania, ordered an evacuation of children and pregnant women who lived within a five-mile radius of the plant-- and 200,000 people fled their homes-- the most serious danger had passed. But significant radiation had escaped, unmonitored. It is further informed that since the above mentioned incident, more than 26,000 nuclear mishaps have occurred in the U.S. and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission estimates that the chance over the next twenty years of another meltdown, or worse, is at least 40 percent.
