This article presents brief descriptions of various socio-political issues and developments as of December 27, 1866. It first focuses on the Nebraska bill which has formed the principal topic of discussion in the Senate during the past week. The debate has continued over the amendment making the operation of the bill dependent on the absence from the State constitution of all political distinctions based on race or color. The main argument urged against this condition is that it is penal in its nature, and ought not to be imposed on any State which has not been guilty of revolt. On the other hand, according to various news-magazines, there are still found indications that the impeachment project has not been abandoned in the U.S. The article further reports about the reform demonstration of the trades unions in London, England, which is the subject of vigorous discussion in the English papers.
