The article focuses on the trial of S.S. Hautsturmführer Franz Paul Stangl, commander of the Treblinka extermination camp in Poland. Only the record of Auschwitz surpassed the ghoulish efficiency of Treblinka in Poland, where more than 700,000 people were gassed, shot, beaten and tortured to death by S.S. and the Ukrainian guards during World War II. The Brazilian government had extradited Stangl, the third most-wanted German war criminal after Adolf Hitler's deputy Martin Bormann and the Auschwitz "doctor" Joseph Mengele, on condition that his sentence would not exceed fifteen years.
