The article focuses on the book "The Tribute-Book. A Record of the Munificence, Self-Sacrifice, and Patriotism of the American People During the War for the Union," by Frank B. Goodrich. So far as the object of this work may be learned from its title-page, the pains bestowed might almost seem superfluous. Neither munificence, self-sacrifice, nor patriotism can be denied a people which contributed men by the million and money by the thousand million to maintain the national integrity, in cheerful response to the call of its appointed magistrates.
