As it was only by the most extraordinary exertions on the part of the Republicans that Connecticut was prevented from throwing its weight into the scale on the side of the rebellion during the war, the result of the vote on the amendment to the Constitution need not surprise anybody, and has, people think, surprised nobody very much. In fact, the interest with which the result was looked for was due mainly to the fact that her notorious weakness on the whole Southern question, and the had eminence she has won in times past by her devotion to Southern ideas, would have given any testimony that she might render on behalf of justice and right an unusual value.
