The article focuses on the probable effects of Southern free labor on Northern industry in the U.S. It has become evident that among the great changes, which must result from the late war will be changes in the relative industry of the northern U.S. Some of these changes will have been hastened by, but cannot be wholly attributed to the war. To begin with New England, a few years since, New England had a large population, which was engaged in general farming, in the cultivation of large farms. But for many years it has become evident that New England must yield to the West in the cultivation of all the great staples of food, reserving only the raising of stock, of wool and of the hay crop, occupations requiring but few hands.
