This article presents information on the book "On the Origin of Language," by W.H.J. Bleek. This little work is written with much apparent profundity; but it seems to be one of a class, not quite unknown in German literature, in which a minimum of valuable truth is wrapped up in a maximum of sounding phraseology. Its author is well known amongst students of language as a man of great erudition and great industry, and his contributions to South African philology have been extensive and important. He has never kept himself within the strict limits of his special department; his enterprising mind and fondness for generalizing have exercised themselves in various and wide-reaching speculations and combinations.
