May 5, 1870 issue

It is a long time since one has known the magazines of the month to average so well as they do this month, the rise in value being due to special improvements which each has made, by creating new departments or enlarging old ones, but also partly due to better and more interesting writing in the body of the magazine. "The English Governess at the Siamese Court" in the "Atlantic" continues to be very entertaining, giving a portrait of the first king, Chowfa Mongkut, whose English in particular is sufficiently amusing.
