The term science, when used absolutely, applies properly to the system of rules which govern the art of investigating truth. It is so fundamental and comprehensive that it can hardly be defined save by an identical sentence: science is the science of thinking or using the human reason. Moreover, on this fundamental stage it is hardly possible to distinguish science and art; the science of thinking and the art of investigating truth become coincident. But if one turns back to the true source of the great scientific principles that is, pure science-one may properly say of that it is the true mistress of all study, investigation, and education.
