There is something in the makeup of the religious and racist right that militates successfully against any kind of subtlety. In April and May no less than five articles appeared piously arguing that Michael Dukakis is not a genuine member of the Greek Orthodox Church because he is married to a Jew. Columnist Lawrence Uzzell told the readers of the newspaper "The Washington Times" on April 28 that Governor Dukakis was not "eligible" to receive the sacraments. Under Orthodox canon law he excommunicated himself by marrying a non-Christian. In "The Washington Times" for April 5, Joseph Sobran, who has been asked by William Buckley to stay off Jewish questions when he writes for the periodical "National Review," said of Dukakis, "He has all but cut himself off from his church. He has married outside his faith and reportedly hasn't even had his children baptized."
