The attempt of B.F. Butler to become Governor of Massachusetts is, of course, mainly the concern of the people of that State, and it is quite true, as one is often told, that if the people want him they will have him. He rapidly began to get control of the bad political elements thrown to the surface by the war. Nobody expected Butler to be honest, decent, or sensible and Butler reveled in the knowledge of the fact. Another thing in the canvass that is surprising many people outside the State is the fact that Massachusetts Republicans should be so very indignant just now over Federal interference in their State election.
