This article focuses on some internal political developments of the United States. For the shameless indifference to public opinion which has made possible in South Carolina the selection by the legislature for judicial functions of two notorious reprobates, bankrupts, and defaulters, the Republican party at the North is in a great degree responsible. According to another news, in April, 1861, the army consisted of nineteen small regiments. In 1866, the peace establishment was fixed at 50,000 men; in 1869, it was reduced to 30,000, and in 1874 to 25,000 men. A vigorous effort will be made this winter to effect a further heavy reduction under the plea of economy.
