The article presents information on higher education in Scotland. The parochial system, which prevailed in Scotland from the time of reformer John Knox till the year 1872, or for nearly two centuries, is so well-known both in America and on the Continent. The theory of the Scotch Reformer was that in every parish in Scotland a good elementary school should be established in close connection with the parochial church, the minister of which should superintend the education of the children, while the land-owners in the parish should bear the expense of the school. In each important town in Scotland a burgh school has been in operation from a very early period, but these schools are not secondary schools. In the larger towns they have become small universities, with separate faculties or departments.
