The article presents information about the book "Dictionnaire de la Langue Fran¸aise," by E. Littré. It covers about 4,800 closely printed quarto pages of three columns each. A very large part of the manuscript was in his own land. Few large works on lexicography are more fully original; none more constantly bears the imprint of the author's personality in every part. Littré, standing in an intermediate position between the literary and the scientific world, having moreover by his philosophical training and bent of mind something more than the fineness of taste which letters give, could with complete success devote all his energies to what is generally a thankless task.
