This article focuses on the book "English Literature," by Stopford Brooke. To give in one himdred and sixty-three 1f!mo pages a readable and valuable sketch of English literature is no easy task, but Brooke, has done this in his "Primer." Brooke handles his vast subject understandingly and appreciatively, and succeeds admirably in the difficult art of saying enough for his purposes without saying too much. There are some faults to which attention may be called. The chapterd headings do not always give a clue to the contents of the chapters over which they are placed.
