The article discusses the divestment campaigns of 1985 and 1986 that rocked the American universities. The campaigns made political analysts reassess the profile of the student. It attracted previously apolitical students in large numbers. Students from all multiracial backgrounds strove to work together in coalitions. All student divestment activists played a vital role in a broad social movement of national importance. The student power was brought to bear not only on particular boards of trustees but also on the nation at large, altering the public debate on how institutions, corporations and the administration of U.S. President Ronald Reagan should respond to apartheid.
