The article presents information on various political developments in the U.S. during early 1870s. According to a report the Republican press, as at present constituted, has no difficulty in protecting itself and its clients. It overwhelms the Democrats hi every field of journalistic activity. It supplies better and fuller news from all parts of the world; comments on it with greater knowledge and greater literary skill; invents or spreads more plausible or probable "stories"; has tenfold greater power of ridicule; and has now a very large capital invested in journalism by men who are simply journalists. According to another report the recommendation of the President and the Secretary of the Treasury, that the legal-tender law he repealed as to future contracts, has thrown the Republican politicians into a state of agitation.
