The article focuses on a philosophical question related to origin, nature and highest form of æsthetic pleasure. The philosophy of evolution attempted to explain pleasure as a sense of usefulness and pain as a feeling of the diminution of vital functions. Certainly, science has not yet disclosed the foundations for a radically new synthesis of any art. Perhaps the understanding has a sort of satisfaction which may justly be called æsthetic. The article also focuses on the "Memoirs of Madame de Rémusat," which show very conclusively that the transition from the Republic to the Empire was very gradual.
