The article presents an overview of the book "A History of England in the Eighteenth Century," by William Edward Hartpole Lecky. The article examines the views Lecky takes of several points in that history, round which controversies of no small moment have raged. The first of these points is the recall of Fitzwilliam, the Lord Lieutenant who was sent over to Ireland in January, 1795, and forced to return in the following March. Lecky's view is that the personal influence of Fitzgibbon and the Beresfords had, more to do with this decisive and indeed fatal step than any considerations of high policy.
