The "Kings in Exile" is the title of a new novel by M. Alphonse Daudet, the French author of "Jack," of the "Nabab," and other books. It seems that in "Jack," which is so far his best novel even better than "Froment jeune et Risler ainé," Daudet had attempted to become a sort of French Dickens. There is a vein of humanity, of tenderness, of love for the poor, the despised, the suffering, in "Jack" which was very charming and very peculiar. But M. Daudet has changed his manner. He has become less humane and more Parisian.
