This article focuses on the book "A Memoir of S.S. Prentiss." This book was written by brother of S.S. Prentiss. Of his numerous speeches very few were reported or have been preserved, and most of those, which appear in this memoir are apologetically reproduced, as not justifying his reputation. There are, in fact, but one or two which can be read with any satisfaction or much profit; and perhaps the argument by which lie maintained his right to a seat in the House of Representatives is the only discourse which fairly suggests his intellectual capacity.
