This article presents several socio-political developments in the U.S. as of 1879. G.W. Curtis has thought it necessary to resign his position is Chairman of the Richmond County Republican Convention, owing to the "serious dissatisfaction" felt by some of the Republicans of the Convention at his recommending the scratching of the ticket in "Harper's Weekly." In his letter he reiterates his belief in the right to scratch as the only effective way, in a Government like ours, to correct and purify the management of parties." On Saturday, at the celebration of the thirteenth anniversary of the Grand Army of the Republic in Philadelphia, John A. Bentley, Commissioner of' Pension, delivered an address in the nature of an apology for the shortcomings of his office.
