This article focuses on several political developments across the world as of September 1, 1879. Both California and Maine have gone Republican at the State elections held on the 3rd and 8th instant respectively. In California, a Republican candidate for Governor, naturally ran somewhat behind the rest of his ticket, owing to the union of the Democrats and New Constitution party. Although no new shipments of gold were made during the week from London to New York, the arrivals here since we last wrote were no less than 5,760,000.
