The article comments on political and social developments in the U.S. The development of steam navigation made it necessary to cut a ship-canal through the Isthmus of Suez, and the time has arrived when it is equally necessary to create a water-way across the American isthmus. The subject has been discussed periodically for three centuries with great earnestness. In an another news, there is at present some curiosity in the public mind to know how the administration feels towards the solid Democratic South after the contest it has had with its representative majority in Congress.
