This article presents information regarding the book "History of the Mass and Its Ceremonies in the Eastern and Western Church," by John O'Brien. The arrangement of this book is somewhat peculiar. It does not present the history of the Mass as a whole in chronological order, but rather a separate history of each particular detail. It commences with a short dissertation on the different liturgies in use in the East and West. One thing is throughout apparent, the unyielding rigor with which the Church insists upon a strict adherence to the minutest detail of her ritual, while at the same time with wonderful skill she dispenses with almost any part of it when she is satisfied that the object to be attained is worth the sacrifice.
