In the June Atlantic, the paper "Art in Engraving on Wood," by Mr. W.J. Linton, which contained very unsparing denunciation of the style of illustration for which Scribner's Monthly has become celebrated, and specially unfavorable mention of some of the more elaborate cuts, has been answered briefly in the editorial pages of the July number of that journal. Mr. Linton, it should be stated, is a man of ripe years and long experience, an engraver on wood of very great and widely-spread reputation, and of forty years' standing; an engraver occasionally of his own designs.
