This article presents a criticism, from a German point of view, of the book "Railroads," by Charles Francis Adams. In the first part of the book, the author publishes the authentic documents connects with the first appearance of railroads in England and in the U.S., whilst in the second part he very judiciously and with statistical proofs demonstrates the evil consequences arising from the chaos of railroads, and from the embittered wars of competition, which, destitute of a single economic idea, have a detrimental influence, not only on trade and commerce, but also on the railroads themselves and their shareholders.
