The article presents information about financial and political conditions in the U.S., as of April 10, 1879. The financial event of the week was the subscription, on Friday, April 4, 1879, of $59,000,000 to the United States 4 per cents. Of this amount the National Bank of Commerce subscribed 40,000,000 in a single order. The subscriptions on this day took all the 4 per cent bonds necessary to furnish the means with which to redeem the entire remainder of 5-20 6 per cent bonds. The debating in the U.S. House improved greatly after effects of U.S. President James Abram Garfield's rather stumpy speech had worn off and there was, before the passage of the Army Bill on Saturday by 148 to 122, some excellent speaking on both sides.
