The article focuses on prevailing political conditions in the U.S., as of April 3, 1879. It is said that if the controversy over the means of securing free and fair elections in the U.S., now raging in Congress were somewhat more serious than it is, that is, if each side was not so much occupied in making the other in a damaging manner, there can be little doubt that a satisfactory solution of the problem could be readily reached. The prevention of fraudulent voting at Federal elections is likely to be as necessary, at least in the large cities, at the North as in the South. The Convention, which has recently completed its work in California, has reported a new constitution, which will be voted upon on the first Wednesday of May 1879.
