The article focuses on political conditions of the U.S. and around the world, as of February 20, 1879. From Thursday to Saturday the Senate had its turn with the Chinese question, and passed the House bill at last by a vote of 39 to 27, with some amendments of slight importance. The Senate has been chiefly occupied with the bill to amend the Internal Revenue laws in which the main interest centered upon the tax on tobacco. The English Ministry have made no formal announcement of their program for the session since the opening of Parliament, but they will devote themselves to home affairs, so as to make some amends for the too vigorous foreign policy of last year.
