The article focuses on the book "English Plays," selected, edited, and arranged by Henry Morley. He has not here attempted that full history of the rise and fall of the ample dramatic literature of language which will some day to see written with a due sense of its importance. To use his own words "The book is not a history, but a series of specimens, with no more narrative than is necessary to explain coherently when and by whom each piece was written." It is rather, a series of analyses of typical and characteristic plays, with abundant extracts, arranged in chronological order, and accompanied by brief biographies of the dramatists as they succeed each other on the stage of life.
