The article discusses the book "A History of New York," by Martha J. Lamb. This first completed volume of the history of New York city brings its story down to the opening of the War of Independence. The author has spared no labor in research and from many original sources has gathered a great variety of details, and has woven them into a distinct continuous history of New York. The volume describes the colonial history of the city, and pictures it on the eve of the Revolution, with its merchants and lawyers united for resistance, its landholders divided between loyalty and the new patriotism. The author asserts for New York equal claims with Massachusetts for beginning the Revolution.
