This article presents information about the book "The Grounding of Modern Feminism," by Nancy F. Cott. Cott has given the readers a new way to understand the paradoxes of modern feminism. Her brilliant book literally grounds feminism in history, both as an ideology and as a social movement, and clarifies its inescapable dilemma. Cott begins her account with the nineteenth-century "woman movement," which included a broad spectrum of female voluntary associations, from suffrage groups led by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Frances Willard's Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and a variety of women's clubs.
