This article focuses on the book "Journals and Journalism: With a Guide for Literary Beginners," by John Oldcastle. This is a handbook to journalism as a profession. Its aim is to show the beginners how to begin, and to give beginners elementary information about the methods of the newspaper and the unwritten laws thereof. The successive chapters discuss "Literary Amateurs," "Introduction to Editors,'' "How to Begin," "Journalism As a Career,'' "In an Editor's Chair,'' and a few kindred topics. Unlike most authors of primers for professional novices, Oldcastle does not overrate the advantages of journalism as a calling, setting forth both sides fairly.
