The article focuses on the book "Fourteen Months in Canton," by John Henry Gray and Mrs. Gray. This unpretending volume is one of the few books upon China whose perusal carries its own evidence of the author's truthfulness, candor, and kindness. Almost everything touched upon in the letters is indeed described or alluded to the author's husband's book; but she has thrown into her sketches that animation and unaffected good-will. This book describes the real change and improvement that has taken place in Canton, China, since that date, better than anything we have seen.
