The article presents information about the book "Sketch of Edward Coles," E.B. Washburne. The story here related is important and interesting alike on personal and historical grounds, and eminently worthy of permanent record. Governor of Illinois, Edward Coles was of a prominent Virginia family. After the conclusion or peace with Great Britain, Coles thought the time at hand for the execution of his purpose. In 1815, he resigned his position as private secretary and went on a tour of exploration to the Northwest Territory.
