This article focuses on the book "Buddha and Early Buddhism," by Arthur Lillie. There are some good points made in it, but on the other hand the errors are many and misleading. Lillie has gathered his information from so many sources that his pages are confusing. It is not easy to draw the line distinctly when such authorities as the "Asoka inscriptions," the "Lalita Vistara," and the "Mahawanso" are brought into immediate connection. But surely Lillie is wrong in taking the "Lalita Vistara" as the "oldest life of Buddha."
